If vulnerability had a volume knob, Hana Vu cranks it up on Public Storage. This stunning full-length debut for Ghostly International wraps brooding bedroom pop in big-room ambition, delivered on a gorgeous clear/white marble vinyl pressing that looks as introspective as it sounds.
Written while living beside a literal public storage unit in LA, Vu’s metaphor is sharp -each track is like a box packed with fragments of memory, emotion, and existential unpacking. Opener April Fool sets a wistful tone with lonely piano and layered vocals, easing into the title track’s fuzzed-out defiance and bruised admissions. Vu’s smoky contralto floats between disillusionment and defiance, especially on bangers like the disco-tinged Aubade and synth-heavy Keeper, where she balances airy melodies with gritty introspection.
Produced with Jackson Phillips (Day Wave), the album glows with layered textures and sonic surprises-gritty guitar swells, orchestral flourishes, and flickers of lo-fi elegance. Gutter surges with feedback and venom, while Everybody’s Birthday is a hook-laced doomsday anthem. By the time we reach the banjo-laced closer Maker, it’s clear Vu isn’t just telling stories - she’s confronting ghosts in the attic of her past.
Pressed on limited clear/white marble vinyl, this edition is as emotionally raw and striking as the music it carries. For fans of introspective indie pop with edge, Public Storage is a treasure trove worth unpacking.
